Socktober: Why are we collecting NEW socks for those experiencing homelessness?
Many people donate old clothes to good causes but what about underwear and socks?
At our Mulberry St Clinic, in partnership with Central Iowa Shelter & Services (CISS), we’re committed to meeting the critical needs of our community’s homeless population. While many people donate old clothes, items like socks and underwear are often overlooked.
Socks are the most requested item of clothing among homeless individuals, yet they are rarely donated. When socks and underwear wear out, most of us simply throw them away. It’s easy to forget how essential they are, especially as we head into the colder months.
Socks play a vital role in foot health, particularly during fall and winter when they help prevent cold feet and even frostbite. For those experiencing homelessness, who often walk long distances in cold and damp conditions, a lack of clean, dry socks can lead to blisters, frostbite, fungal infections, and other serious health issues. Many of those facing homelessness do not have clean, dry socks available.
This Socktober, we invite you to help us provide for those in need by donating NEW socks for men, women, and children. Hats and gloves are also greatly appreciated.
Socks can be dropped off at:
